Collar Types

4 March 2024

Collars have been used by John Smedley ever since the men’s polo shirt, Isis was launched in the 1930s. We use six different collar designs, which are knitted at our Lea Mills factory in Derbyshire. Our styles which feature collars, have their collars made separately to the rest of the garment, and the two are then attached. This ensures the greatest quality and comfort.

The fashioned collar is the oldest collar that John Smedley still produces – this can be found on Isis and Finchley.

Fashioned Collar

The John Smedley fashioned collar provides a traditional finish to a carefully selected range of garments. Favoured for its heritage, the fashioned collar offers a great partner for an over-sized coat or looks equally as stylish when paired with a blazer. The fashioned collar is the original John Smedley collar – it first featured on Isis, our most iconic men’s polo shirt, in the 1930s.

The design of the fashioned collar has not changed since it was first produced, and offers a glimpse of John Smedley’s heritage. It is still manufactured, with care, at our Derbyshire based Lea Mills factory. The fashioned collar is exclusive to Isis, Finchley and Dorset.

Fashioned Sports Collar

The sleek sports collar provides a modern finish to the timeless quality of a John Smedley garment. Favoured for its smaller collar size this contemporary design looks great with a fitted jacket or can be worn with a V-neck pullover for a more formal style. The sports collar was created as a modern addition, taking inspiration from the earlier designed stand collar that features on Adrian. The sports collar has a slightly smaller collar length than the rest of the collar designs and has a wider space between each side of the collar. The collar was first introduced to the John Smedley collection when it was featured on Tyburn in 2011.

Skipper Collar

The classic skipper collar offers an elegant open neck. Its innovative design is loved by John Smedley customers. This buttonless feature embodies sophistication – a great match for a cardigan or V- neck sweater. The skipper collar has been produced by John Smedley since the 1990’s and is still crafted in the same way and with the same care it always has been. The skipper collar was designed as an alternative to wearing a polo shirt with the top one or two buttons undone. The collar was first featured on the style Noah, a short sleeve polo shirt.

Shawl Collar

The shawl collar adds a layer of luxury to our jackets. The low fashioned collar adds a sense of fluency to every garment that it is proudly knitted in to.

John Smedley’s shawl collar has been part of the collection since 2001, when its design first featured on the style Broxwood. The production of the shawl collar differs from our other collars as garment and collar are knitted as one.

John Smedley’s shawl collar looks supremely elegant when paired with a Cherwell roll neck jumper or with a Belden T-shirt for a luxurious relaxed look.

Stand Up Collar

The stand up collar offers a high neck finish to a carefully selected range of John Smedley garments. Featuring a zip, this versatile collar gives an option of styles in which to wear the garment; fully closed for a brilliantly polished look or partially closed for elegant off duty style. Tapton, featuring the stand up collar, was first introduced to the range in the Spring collection of 2016, and due to popularity inspired the John Smedley Icon, Barrow.

The stand up collar uses the traditional two step method of knitting the collar and the rest of the garment separately. The zip feature is knitted to the garment during the seaming process to ensure a quality zip that is as soft on the skin as it is on the eye
