Masters of Merino

9 January 2024
  • John Smedley have been partners with New Zealand Merino since 1994.
  • The superior fibre is whiter, longer and stronger.
  • We have a fully transparent supply chain which is not always possible when purchasing through open market auctions.
  • Every farm carries our raw material specification, along with the percentages of the blend to create a fibre distribution curve which will aid the spinning processes.
  • Our Merino is grown to meet a fibre fineness of approximately 19.2 microns, the average human hair is approximately 90 microns.
  • The New Zealand Merino are farmed using ZQRx, regenerative farming practices to help combat climate change. The changes made include:

  1.           Producing their own electricity on their farms.
  2.           Using clean energy.
  3.           Trialling methane mitigating technology.
  4.           Carefully controlling their fuel, fertiliser and electricity usage.

  • Our extra fine merino fibre is light weight and is an ideal product for all year round.
  • The fineness and natural crimp add to the fibre’s resilience and recovery from creasing.
  • The wool does not “prickle” the wearer.
  • The breathable nature of merino wool help to keep you warm in colder weather and cool when its warm - a buffer against changing conditions.
  • Merino can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water, helping to keep the wearer fresher for longer.
  • Merino can naturally deodorise by resting the garment between wears without having to wash and add to climate change emissions.
