Definitions
John Smedley considers that modern slavery encompasses:
- human trafficking
- forced work, through mental or physical threat
- being owned or controlled by an employer through mental or physical abuse or the threat of abuse
- being dehumanised, treated as a commodity or being bought or sold as property
- being physically constrained or to have restriction placed on freedom of movement
Commitment
John Smedley acknowledges its responsibilities in relation to tackling modern slavery and commits to complying with the provisions in the Modern Slavery Act 2015. We understand that this requires an ongoing review of both our internal practices in relation to our labour force and, additionally, our supply chains.
We do not enter into business with any other organisation, in the United Kingdom or abroad, which knowingly supports or is found to involve itself in slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour.
No labour provided to John Smedley in the pursuance of the provision of our own services are obtained by means of slavery or human trafficking. We strictly adhere to the minimum standards required in relation to our responsibilities under relevant employment legislation in the United Kingdom and any other country where John Smedley operates, and in many cases exceeds those minimums in relation to our employees.
Supply Chain Structure
In order to fulfil our activities, the main supply chains of John Smedley include those related to ethical sourcing of Merino Wool & Extra Long Staple Cotton. Our wool is farmed in New Zealand, transported to China for washing and shipped to Italy for dyeing & spinning. John Smedley cotton is grown in California to meet our specification and quality standard. This is authenticated and approved by the USDA before shipping the cotton lint to Pakistan for spinning. The cotton is then shipped to John Smedley where we dye the yarn to meet all international standards of compliance. All of our raw materials are certified to the highest environmental standards, social governance and animal welfare rights. These are included in our procurement documents. Sustainability reports highlighting all areas are received each year along with SLCP third party audits.
Organisational Policies
John Smedley has the following policies which further define its stance on modern slavery such as our corporate social responsibility policy, supplier code of conduct and recruitment and selection policy.
Assessing And Managing Risk
We consider our main exposure to the risk of slavery and human trafficking to exist within our international product procurement and sales chains because they involve the provision of labour in countries where protections against breaches of human rights may be limited.
In general, we consider our exposure to slavery/human trafficking to be relatively limited. Nonetheless, we have taken steps to ensure that such practices do not take place in our business or the business of any organisation that supplies goods and/or services to us.
Due Diligence In Relation To Modern Slavery
We carry out due diligence processes in relation to ensuring slavery and/or human trafficking does not take place in our organisation or supply chains, including conducting a review of the control of suppliers.
Training
We offer training to colleagues to effectively implement our stance on modern slavery through our induction training and by giving them access to the relevant policies and statements.
Mitigation
John Smedley, has not, to its knowledge, conducted any business with another organisation which has been found to have involved itself with modern slavery.
In accordance with section 54(4) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015, we have taken the following steps to ensure that modern slavery does not take place:
- regularly review our supplier contracts to include termination powers in the event that the supplier is, or is suspected, to be involved in modern slavery
- put measures in place to identify and assess the potential risks in its supply chains
- we may undertake impact assessments of its services upon potential instances of slavery
- we create action plans to address risk to modern slavery, where appropriate
- we design any actions to be taken to embed a zero-tolerance policy towards modern slavery
