Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

Hollywood’s leading lady, Elizabeth Taylor was married eight times, two being to Richard Burton. The two fell in love on the set of the 1963 film, Cleopatra and though both married at the time, by March 1964, they divorced their partners and married each other. Their turbulent relationship soon hit the rocks and they divorced in ’74 and remarried again in 1975, only to split again a year later.

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall

Bacall was 19 starring in her first leading film role when she met 45 year-old Bogart on the set of To Have and Have Not in 1944. Bogart was married to his third wife at the time when sparks flew between the two stars and their relationship progressed quickly. Bogart divorced soon after the film debuted and he married Bacall a couple of months later. They went on to have two children together and stayed married until Bogart’s death in 1957.

Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh

In 1936 22 year-old rising stage star actress Vivien Leigh, first met Olivier whilst watching a West End production. Both married, the following year they were both cast in Fire Over England as love interests where they began their three year love affair. As they began to rise in stardom, the affair was revealed and both filed for divorce and married in 1940. The pair remained married for a decade until they divorced due to Vivien’s mood swings. Despite Laurence’s difficulties with Vivien, shortly before the actor passed away, he was seen by a friend watching a film starring his ex-wife and saying, “This, this was true love.”

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward

When Woodward first met Newman in 1953, he was still married with three children. He was making his debut on Broadway when he first met Woodward in the agent’s office. Timing was an issue and they remained friends, however in ’57 they reconnected to film The Long, Hot Summer, and chemistry was undeniable. Newman divorced and they wed in Vegas in 1958. The couple’s union spanned five decades, until Newman’s death in 2008.

Jean Simmons and Stewart Granger

Whilst filming Caesar and Cleopatra in 1948, Simmons developed a crush on Granger and they later became sweethearts, though Granger was 16 years older and married. Granger later divorced his wife and he and Jean eloped to the USA. One child later, the marriage broke down and in 1960, Simmons divorced Stewart to marry director Richard Brooks. Stewart later said: “Every man I would meet would say to me, ‘I have always loved your wife.'”

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn

The pair, who co-starred in nine movies together, famously lived separately throughout their love affair of 25 years. They took great pains to keep their private life out of the spotlight – It was not until Tracy’s wife died in 1983, that Hepburn publicly acknowledged the affair. A few weeks after filming Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner in 1967, Spencer died aged 67 of a heart attack, Katharine did not attend her lover’s funeral out of respect for his family.
