Our second collaboration with Teatum Jones, the pair were united by a shared fascination of humans and their stories. Truly believing in the power of fashion to present pro-social message of inclusivity and positive identity, they believe in creating socially conscious fashion that puts the craftspeople and the customer at the heart of their creations. We spoke to them about their work and latest designs.

How did you get into design?

Design is in our blood! Our families had their own design businesses and we both knew from a young age we wanted to work in fashion.

Do you feel you’ve evolved as a designer over the years?

HUGELY. With experience comes confidence. But you never loose that desire to keep on bettering yourself and your last collection.

Which piece of work are you currently most proud of?

Very proud of our AW16 International Woolmark Prize collection as we were the first ever British label to win the prize. We joined an alumni that included Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent, which we’re pretty proud of.

Where do you draw inspiration from in your work?

We create fashion from human stories.

Do you have a particular process/place you like to work and create?

We are Designers in Residence at the British Library, which means we get access to secret archives not available to the public. This has opened us up to an incredible breath of material which we draw on every season.

What do you think is the most challenging aspects of your job?

Switching off. When its your own business its rather difficult to take that holiday and genuinely let go of all the thought processes and operations you’re leaving behind. It’s a working progress.

What is your favourite John Smedley knit?

Our signature Aisling cut out fine knit that we carry forward as its so popular. It’s the perfect date-night jumper.

Describe your style in three words.

Bold, colourful, textured

Biggest fashion faux pas?

Wearing a cow print fake fur suit to own clothes day in year 11… still haunts me now.
