Social Responsibility

Our Lea Mills factory is at the heart of a world heritage site, which means we have a responsibility to the local environment. We source ethically produced materials, engage with our employees and use energy saving techniques wherever possible.

Creating knitwear via a responsible, socially aware process is important both to us and all John Smedley customers. That's why in 2009 we commissioned an environmental audit as part of our commitment to improving the way we work.

John Smedley has been ecologically friendly for over 200 years. In the Victorian era, we devised ingenious solutions to create the best possible working conditions in our Derbyshire mill. Large windows let natural light into sewing rooms and a yarn store over the nearby river helped retain moisture in our yarn.
