It was the second John Smedley who set this vision for the company which has been passed down through the generations. We continue to be industry pioneers, using the latest equipment to produce the highest quality knitwear.

A perfect blend

In 1877 we were one of the first knitwear manufacturers to install the new 'Cotton's Patent' knitting machines. Today we continue to break down barriers, both through our pursuit of quality and the technology we use to create luxurious knitwear. The original factory remains the focal point of today's yarn preparation and knitting operations, steeped in history but accommodating some of the world's most modern machinery.

However, we only use new technology if it allows us to make the finest knitwear possible. In our Lea Mills factory, alongside the new machines sit others that have been there for more than 50 years. We still use them because they are the best at what they do. It's this mix of old and new, combined with generations of skill and craftsmanship, that makes John Smedley knitwear the best in the world.

Unique to John Smedley

Innovation and introducing the latest technology is key to John Smedley's brand strategy and part of what makes us unique. There are five machines that only we use. They allow us to make collars for classic John Smedley shirts, such as Isis and Dorset. These machines are the reason no other brand can imitate the quality of those shirts.
