5 minutes with our designers

14th October 2011 | Design, Style | Leave a comment

As the Autumn / Winter season truly sets in, I caught up with our lovely designers, Gemma and Pip to discuss what key trends they’ll be sporting this winter.

C: Gemma, are you ready…

G: Fire away.

C: What’s your favourite colour for Autumn/ Winter 2011?

G: I love mustard because I really enjoy a good yellow. Mustard is a lovely answer to the bright yellows of the summer. I have Trinity in mustard which is flattering and will definitely be an integral part of my Autumn Winter wardrobe.

C: What’s getting you excited this Autumn / Winter?

G: I LOVE charity pin badges, I think they make great stocking fillers and the money goes to a good cause. There’s loads of variety and colour – just like our Smedley jumpers!

C: Have you thought about Christmas shopping yet? If so, what’s on your list?

G: We’ll I’ve got my stocking fillers sorted! – Pearl is a fantastic party piece made from soft yarns with a touch of sparkle for a ‘lofty’ handle. The V-front and V-back is sexy and gorgeous for a night out. ..That’s for myself! Other gifting ideas are the ‘fairisle-style’ pattern accessories set, Jardine, Penrose and Alvey which make a gorgeous Christmas present.

Hello Gemma

Now Pip, talk to me…

C: What is your must-have piece for the winter season?

P: The cape from the Capsule Collection is great for wearing over a long sleeved knit and perfect to throw on and snuggle in to. Black is an absolute classic and so this was my investment piece for the season.

C: What are your favourite colours for Autumn/Winter 2011?

P: I love warm colours, my favourite colour John Smedley has produced this season is Beetroot.

C: What’s your favourite trend for Autumn/Winter 2011?

P: This season is all about mixing patterns, stripes and textures for a preppy look. I love this look when worn with short trousers and brogues and you don’t have to worry about matching because it’s all about the clash! Layering is also a big trend and perfect for the British unpredictable weather!

C: Where did you draw inspiration from for the Capsule Collection?

P: I drew inspiration from the technology of the whole garment machine – I wanted to embrace the fact that you can produce beautiful garments that are technical and stylish. The trench is a great example of a classic style that is completely seamless and truly iconic.

Thanks Pip!

The Devlin wears Smedley

15th June 2011 | Colour, Music, Style | Leave a comment

Devlin wearing Eustace in Engine Blue

This should have been posted a few weeks back but we were chuffed to bits when we spotted Devlin wearing Smedley at Radio One’s Big Weekend. Not only did he smash his set but looked the bizz. Devlin wore style ‘Eustace’ in Engine Blue, made from John Smedley’s Merino Jerseywear and when performing with Jessie J, style ‘Tristan’ one of Spring Summer’s Miami inspired pattern. For a top to toe look – pair ‘Tristan’ with matching socks ‘Alvin’.

If you haven’t yet tried our Merino Jerseywear, it holds different qualities to our extra-fine Merino Wool. Made with the same traceable fibres as Merino wool, the same care and attention to detail goes into every garment. The various pieces of the garment are cut and sewn together with cover seaming and over locking. This produces Jerseywear that is still of a fine knit, however is not with the same appearance as knitwear. The end result is a light garment that makes it perfect for layering or teaming up with your favourite John Smedley knitwear garments from the main collection. Merino Jerseywear is machine washable when following the appropriate product care.

Never Underdressed

16th October 2010 | Style | Leave a comment

Some know it as the “dickie bow”, and we absolutely love this look as an alternative to wearing a traditional tie. Ever feel a little underdressed? Forget the clip-on you have wedged down the side of your sock drawer and add a little 007 into your wardrobe! Our Eugene bow tie is hand finished here at our mill in derbyshire from the finest New Zealand merino wool, so it’s as soft as they come and will look great for ages! We noticed recently Esquire magazine picked up on this style as seen in the shot below.

Why Settle for Anything Less?

Why Settle for Anything Less? We’ve all said that to ourselves on the odd occasion, I know I do when buying my new knitwear for the season – there’s only one place to look really! And, I’m sure this question was recently asked by Robbie Williams (or his “in-the-know stylist”) as he seems to be sporting one of our Polo Shirts in his latest video for “Shame“. We know Robbie is a lover of all things British, and can only salute him on this latest style choice!

Shirts and Shorts

Multi-coloured delight of Pan Shirt

Multi-coloured delight of Pan Shirt

An exciting week here at John Smedley, our Spring Summer ‘10 Men’s Tailored Collection of Shirts and Trousers launched exclusively Online and at our Brook Street Store.

Shirt styles have been re-designed to sit perfectly underneath our Sea Island Cotton pullovers and cardigans. You’ll find the John Smedley signature rounded “Mayfair” collar, which goes with a V-Neck like strawberries go with cream. My personal favourite has to be style “Pan“, with its multi colour striped pattern. Perfect for the office when teamed with a pair of smart trousers, or roll up the sleeves and mix with denim at the weekend.

Our menswear designer Nick, has gone all out with the Spring ‘10 Trouser options. I’m particularly loving the shorts this season (Matrix and Argon), which i’ve been putting to good use during the bout of warm weather we experienced last week here in the UK. I say, add a pair to your wardrobe now – ready for the suitcase this summer!

Under the famous John Smedley bridge

Under the famous John Smedley bridge

This week at the mill we were joined by Claire Susan Hartley, a fashion student who we’re sure will make waves in the fashion industry in coming years. This is her story….

I am a final year student at Nottingham Trent University studying Fashion Knitwear Design. My collection combines the best of old and new knitting technology focussing on the roots of the British knitwear industry. I have created a luxury underwear as outerwear collection from pre- consumer waste, donated by John Smedley. I have adopted a zero waste policy and therefore all rules and previous theory on creating garments has had to be abandoned. I have adapted my thinking and consequently designed to confront the problems with more traditional methods of production. I have created garments with zero waste and used what is laser cut away within other garments. One garment evolves onto the next using the waste from the previous and so the journey begins.

The photo shoot on monday was a great success and there is no better backdrop than that of my initial inspiration, the home of British Knitwear, John Smedley. Thank you to all at John Smedley for all their support.

Get the Look with Blackwell Cardigan as featured in ES Magazine

Looking for a Nautical look this season to mirror those seen in the latest catwalk shows? Then look no further! We’re currently loving ES Magazine’s “Get the Look” feature, which selects our very own Blackwell cardigan to enhance that dapper deckhand style. As suggested in the feature, try teaming with some skinny white trousers, and a neck scarf to finish the look.

Top-to-Toe

True Top-to-Toe style

True Top-to-Toe style

The past few seasons have been an exciting time at John Smedley with the introduction of our sock collection, the merino jersey pieces and not to mention the men’s capsule tailored collection. All of which have helped to create ‘top-to-toe’ looks for our John Smedley man.

If, like me, you often find your shirt collar peeking out from under your Bobby v-neck our tailored shirts offer the perfect solution. The rounded Mayfair collar sits effortlessly underneath, and stays put, which means your won’t constantly need to check your reflection to ensure everything is still in place.

Instead you can just admire at how Dandy you look, particularly if sporting one of our co-ordinating knitted ties!

Grab them now, at our current special price of £70 – reduced from £157. We have a great selection of classic ticking stripes and checks in easy to wear colour options. Gingham is my personal favourite, a timeless fabric which looks fresh whatever the season.
