Drumroll please…

02nd January 2013 | Competitions, General, Pic of the Day | Leave a comment

We had some very special guests up at the Mill last December. For those of you who aren’t aware, we ran a competition to win a track bike built by Ricky Feather. The lucky winner was announced in a dedicated video you can watch here.

Conrad visited the Mills in December to be presented with the bike by Ricky Feather and our chairman, Mr Charles Marsden-Smedley. A very excited Conrad was given a tour of the factory alongside Ricky, a treat in itself being a dedicated John Smedley fan. With much sadness for many folk in the office, we bid the bike farewell, however the prize couldn’t have gone to a more deserving winner.

Congratulations Conrad!

Delighted with his prize!

Florence Nightingale’s Window at the Mill.

13th August 2010 | History, Retail | Leave a comment

This weekend the John Smedley Mill is playing host to the Florence Nightingale Heritage weekend. A great weekend of family fun will be taking part on the John Smedley football pitch, not forgetting the Mill Sale, so lots going on up here.

Along with the design team we’ve been busy putting together a window for the event. It shows the type of display most often used in shop-fronts or at trade exhibitions in the late Victorian/Edwardian Era. These garments were made by the craftsmen and women, here at Lea Mills during Florence Nightingale’s long lifetime and have not been on display for over 25 years.

Attack of the …. Ducks!

11th June 2010 | General | Leave a comment

As you may know, a feature of the John Smedley Mill here in Derbyshire is the river and damn that run by. The damn is currently home to around 12 ducks, 3 of which being  young ducklings which manage to keep visitors and mill workers entertained throughout the day. Approach with caution however, the smallest wiff of a bread based product and you’ll be surrounded! We’re currently baking up extra bread supplies just to keep them happy.
