Brand Watch: Silken Favours

17th May 2013 | General, Pic of the Day, Press, Style | Leave a comment

Our Spring / Summer 2013 campaign was shot in the heart of Mayfair, London. The team worked with 7 models to create individual looks for the different collections within the range.

Our rich heritage and roots in the Derbyshire countryside is always at the centre of everything we do and the focus in this shoot was to make sure that the accessories we used, were an extension of this. Cue, Silken Favours. Although this brand may not have been around for 229 years, the products are playful, made from beautiful silk and most importantly made in the UK. Creator, Vicki Murdock  is a print designer who uses pen and ink techniques to create the designs. The range features an assortment of scarves,  cushions and soon, shirts*excited face* in a selection of quirky prints.

The Silken Favours scarf is styled here with our 70% cashmere / 30% silk sweater, Rochelle. Danielle wears the scarf twisted around her neck, for a modest injection of colour against the silver sweater.

Ok, so I’m slightly obssessed with the Silken Favours cushions, meet Stanley…don’t even get me started on Bob.

My weekend outfit

12th April 2013 | Fun, General, Pic of the Day, Style | Leave a comment

It’s Friday and as the weekend draws closer, my thoughts can’t help but turn to weekend plans. With temperatures set to be heating up this weekend (at long last) I can finally consider wearing a dress with shock horror, no tights! Tomorrow I am visiting Brighton for the first time and I’m really excited about the beautiful things I’ve been told to see and do. My recent purchase of the Zaina dress from the Spring / Summer 2013 collection will be making an appearance so I decided to give you a taste of how I will style it tomorrow.

The bag is by the Cambridge Satchel Company in fluorescent yellow and the ‘Elizabeth’ brogues are from the Dr. Martens Made in England range.

Umbro and John Smedley Recreate Iconic Athletic Pieces

23rd July 2012 | Design, History, Press, Retail, Style | Leave a comment

Umbro is renowned worldwide as a football brand, but over its 88 year history the brand has been involved in many aspects of British sport, from rugby to tennis and, more newsworthy for this year, athletics.

Recently referencing their archives, the Umbro design team encountered an Umbro vintage running vest and track sweater, which transpired were worn by British athletes back in 1948. Only one original piece of each item was remaining in the Umbro archive.

Two Very British Brands, One Very British Summer

These two incredibly rare pieces of British athletic history have now been reinterpreted through a very British collaboration between Umbro and Matlock-based knitwear brand John Smedley. With over 225 years manufacturing experience, John Smedley has applied their superior knowledge of the finest knitwear to these iconic Umbro designs, creating two covetable pieces that celebrate two very British brands in one very British summer.

The 1948 Field Sweater in dark navy was originally worn as a track warm up top by athletes in 1948. This modern reinterpretation retains its retro cut, whilst simple style details such as the double linked rib collar, mid zip detail and ribbed cuff and hem ensures it is a thoroughly contemporary piece. Sleek in silhouette, the updated 1948 Field Sweater also includes concealed, internal cut and sew pockets with dark navy stitch showing through on the exterior – perfectly placed to accommodate the accoutrements of any urban athlete.  A final, subtle, detail to this unique piece is the internal number patch, concealed in the back of the sweater. Showing the number 102, it celebrates the number of goals scored at Wembley during the summer of 1948. Crafted from John Smedley’s Sea Island cotton in a 24 gauge knit, this lightweight knit is perfect for the summer season.

The 1948 Tangeru Shirt in vintage ecru is a distinctive and discerning nod to British athletics. Inspired by the vest worn by competitive athletes in 1948, the Tangeru is a three button, round collar, short sleeve tee, crafted from 30 gauge John Smedley Sea Island Cotton. The patriotic red, white and blue stripes sit boldly across the chest, whilst front and centre is a blank ecru fabric patch, positioned accurately where the team patch was in the original 1948 design. This iconic design celebrates the vintage aesthetics of athletics.

The Cambridge Satchel Company

22nd August 2011 | Colour, Design | Leave a comment

There’s nothing we like more than a British company, manufacturing in the UK. The Cambridge Satchel Company was set up in 2008 by mother-and-daughter duo, Freda Thomas and Julie Deane. Offering a range of satchels, backpacks and ‘batchels’ available from £50 to £130+.

The traditional and nostalgic nature of the bags has meant the company has succeeded in targeting a mix of ages. Available in a variety of colours, the ‘fluro’ range has seen countless features in editorials and has proved the must-have accessory for Spring/Summer 11. We have a feeling these guys are here to stay!

Loving these summer brights!

Nottingham’s best-kept secret, The Walk café. Located in Nottingham city centre, this is the quintessential British experience. The Walk offers the best of British with tea and cake galore. Food ranges from a slice of Victoria sponge to homemade soup served on beautiful china.  Whether you pop in here for an afternoon tea or spot of lunch, The Walk takes you to a far away place. Young, friendly staff serve in black and white outfits, pearls and fascinators. The mix of old and new is reflected in the décor with a fusion of English rose come Art Deco. Located off castle gate, this café is easy to miss but hard to forget. This is a must for anyone visiting Nottingham.
