Style on Stage

25th October 2010 | Music, Style | Leave a comment (1)

Yes, I confess my ‘guilty pleasure’ is X factor! I love music, performance and a great singing voice, can transform a Saturday evening.

As my colleague just said when  a man or woman  picks up an instrument (especially a guitar) and plays and sings so beautifully , what is not to love about them.

So imagine your favourite X factor performer takes to the stage and does all of the above, plus has great taste in clothes. Matt’s John Smedley Bobby vee neck in Charcoal,( I am sure it was) I hope helped to keep him comfortable and confident on stage- already our winner.

Smedley ‘Til “He” Dies

16th October 2010 | Retail | Leave a comment

We know he’s already been mentioned in our blog before (and we don’t want to over inflate his ego), but we couldn’t help but mention an excerpt from Martin Freeman’s recent interview in ES Magazine. When asked about his favourite places to shop, Martin replied “I’ll wear John Smedley till I die so I love the flagship store on Brook Street.”

So if you fancy a bit of celebrity spotting, or just to check out the latest collection of our finest knits head down to our Flagship Store, Brook Street, London.

Never Underdressed

16th October 2010 | Style | Leave a comment

Some know it as the “dickie bow”, and we absolutely love this look as an alternative to wearing a traditional tie. Ever feel a little underdressed? Forget the clip-on you have wedged down the side of your sock drawer and add a little 007 into your wardrobe! Our Eugene bow tie is hand finished here at our mill in derbyshire from the finest New Zealand merino wool, so it’s as soft as they come and will look great for ages! We noticed recently Esquire magazine picked up on this style as seen in the shot below.

Brook Street’s Yarnstorming.

14th October 2010 | General, Retail | Leave a comment (1)

As you know from reading our blog on Monday, “Stitch London” and the “Knit the City” teams visited our Brook Street flagship store. I travelled down from our Matlock mill to take part in the wool week event with the rest of the Brook Street team.

The shop doors where closed at 6pm, inside the knitters were eagerly awaiting to get started with their Yarnstorming. A crowd of knitters and passers by were forming outside to watch the window take shape. Shortly after we re-opened the shop and greeted knitters and bloggers with champagne and all things knitted which ranged from little sheep, a brilliant copy of our famous bridge, scooters and lots of mini people wearing our classic styles.

It was a brilliant night to start wool week and well done to our friends at “Stitch London” and “Knit the city” they did a great job Yarnstorming the shop. If you haven’t seen the window yet its well worth a peek, it will be on shown in our Brook Street flagship store window until the 22nd October.

Caramel, the essential ingredient for everyone’s wardrobe this autumn. Caramel’s being seen everywhere at the minute, with our take on the trend proving no exception.  Perfect to wear underneath other garments and to carry you through to spring, this look is a true investment. A hit for males and females, this gorgeous buttery, tan caramel can be worn in all your favourite John Smedley styles including Spyder and Orchid. It’s this combination of our truly versatile classics alongside this muted, neutral shade which makes this look such a hit. What better way to incorporate this season’s hottest trend with your favourite John Smedley. I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely craving some caramel now!

Stitch Me Up!

11th October 2010 | General, Retail | Leave a comment (1)

Our friends at “Stitch London” and “Knit the City” will be yarnstorming the John Smedley flagship store tonight (Monday 11th October) at 6.30pm – 8.00pm. Well what is yarnstorming you may ask yourself? Those in the know will tell you that “yarnstorming is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted cloth rather than paint or chalk”.

Stitch London (formerly Stitch and Bitch London) is a free, friendly yet feisty knitting group run by Lauren ‘Deadly Knitshade’ O’Farrell. Experts in their field, they have dedicated their time to prepare for the ultimate of yarnstorms for one night only.

If you can join the team tonight at 24 Brook Street, you can enjoy a special 20% discount on designer knitwear for all Stitch Londoners, a glass of sparkly, the chance to see a live yarnstorm and meet some of the John Smedley team. All we ask is for you to tweet/facebook the event to all your followers, and check back later in the week for pictures and news from the event.

Visit the Stitch London Blog to see sneak previews of tonights wonderful creations!

The sun has got his hat on! No it hasn’t. Yes it has. Ahh! I don’t know! Is it just me, or does anybody else not know what to wear? Undoubtedly this is the season to layer our clothes, so what a perfect opportunity to try garments from our women’s Autumn/Winter ’10 range. Inspired

06th October 2010 | General | Leave a comment

Before I start this, I just want to establish for the record that I am no technophobe, nor am I a writer, but it was the sentiment of the written word which has inspired me to write.

Having been, in the past a prolific letter writer, I was delighted to receive a beautifully penned letter. The elegant loops of the handwriting, the sepia ink and the creamy vellum, all contributed to the delight of receiving this letter.

The letter writer had been inspired to put pen to paper following reading this article in the Telegraph magazine, which refers to our ‘Made in Britain’ credentials and the feel and quality of our products. The letter request was for knitwear prices and stockists in the local area and my thoughts turned to the independent retailers and stylish department stores, who offer great service, which we could direct this customer towards. This would be a purchase that was carefully researched, planned and executed, and once tried the garment would be a delight to the wearer and for many years to come.

So in this time of convenient shopping on-line (which I do, a lot) and texting a quick message, let us all be inspired by this letter writer; enjoy the action of writing with an ink pen, the delight in receiving a letter, research and choose our purchases carefully and enjoy the feel of the garment as we buy and enjoy the timeless elegance of that piece of John Smedley knitwear.
