Under the famous John Smedley bridge

Under the famous John Smedley bridge

This week at the mill we were joined by Claire Susan Hartley, a fashion student who we’re sure will make waves in the fashion industry in coming years. This is her story….

I am a final year student at Nottingham Trent University studying Fashion Knitwear Design. My collection combines the best of old and new knitting technology focussing on the roots of the British knitwear industry. I have created a luxury underwear as outerwear collection from pre- consumer waste, donated by John Smedley. I have adopted a zero waste policy and therefore all rules and previous theory on creating garments has had to be abandoned. I have adapted my thinking and consequently designed to confront the problems with more traditional methods of production. I have created garments with zero waste and used what is laser cut away within other garments. One garment evolves onto the next using the waste from the previous and so the journey begins.

The photo shoot on monday was a great success and there is no better backdrop than that of my initial inspiration, the home of British Knitwear, John Smedley. Thank you to all at John Smedley for all their support.

Challenge Complete!

Well we made it! It was pretty tough at times but with grit and determination and “Team Smedley” spirit we completed the Prima Solutions Adventure Challenge on Saturday in 7 hours and 15 minutes. All centred around Wimbelball Lake in the Exmoor National Park we started early morning with the trail challenge; a lap of the lake with some hills and challenges thrown in. Then onto the bike ride; another lap of the lake with a slightly different hillier route. A canoe relay cooled us down slightly and then back on the bikes for a final lap of the lake. Not sure of our total raised yet, but overall the event is said to have raised approximately £60,000! Although still a bit tender, pain is temporary and we’re already talking about taking on next years challenge!

Timelords should try John Smedley

Timelords should try John Smedley

Now, not may people know this about me, but Doctor Who is my Saturday afternoon vice (I plan my day around its scheduling) and I have to say Matt Smith’s character is my favourite so far.  He is the epitome of eccentricity and his look is one I aspire to.

I also think he should get some John Smedley in his life.  He’d love our forthcoming Autumn 2010 collection which offers a host of covetable pieces including a knitted bow tie!  It could have been made for him.  Also, as the last episode showed, there is always a place for a Smedley, even if that is hurtling towards a ‘cold-star’ whilst being tormented by a Dream-Lord.

So what do you say Doctor?  There’s plenty of room in the tardis for what could become a very healthy addiction to the finest knitwear in the galaxy.

Prima Solutions Adventure Challenge

As the weekend of the Prima Adventure Challenge approaches I’m thinking about how I’ve never undertaken a challenge quite like the one ‘Team Smedley’ are about to attempt. But whilst the nerves are starting to kick in so is the excitement. It’s great to have the opportunity to do something like this especially for such a good cause! However, I have just been informed by one of the other team members that it’s expected to be the hottest day of the year so far on Saturday! Spare a thought for us about 6am Saturday morning when you’re tucked up in bed and we’re about to begin our 10 hour challenge!

As blogged about in an earlier post, our budding adventurers are in full training for the upcoming Prima Solutions Adventure Challenge. Even though their training regime is of Iron-Man standard, It’s good to report no pulled muscles as yet! They did however find time for a few photos around the mill earlier today. Keep checking back at the blog to read about their progress.

Light and Breezy

Our glorious store front

Our glorious store front

Our flagship store windows at 24 Brook street, London are looking super light and fresh. Gaze on the coolest cotton in sun-bleached shades and feel instantly refreshed and with a hint of summer to come. The weather will get warmer, but in the meantime our women’s cardigans are the best cover up to keep out the chill wind, before that warm breeze comes by.

When in doubt, grab a cardi…

Blackwell... So many colours!

Blackwell... So many colours!

So, here we are in May but experiencing weather reminiscent of last December, cold and wet, and some people waking up to snow!

Unsurprisingly this can cause a feast of wardrobe dilemmas, not least the question of ‘top layer’. My advice, button up in a cardigan. Not only will you be warm in the cool of the morning, but you can easily shed a layer should the temperature ever rise above 10 degrees (here’s hoping) and you can put it back on when the sun goes in.

Incredibly versatile, wear with a shirt and tie for work and over a tee at the weekend. I’d sleep in one if it wasn’t frowned upon!

Blackwell and Neville are perfect as they come in a great choice of colours. Am I wearing one now?  Take a wild guess…

Did you see Matisse?

John Smedley's Matisse inspired design

John Smedley's Matisse inspired design

Last night on BBC One, as part of the Modern Masters series, our Matisse jumper was featured. Although not directly influenced by the great man himself, the style does reflect all of the same characteristics of his ‘paper cuts’, striking shapes of colour mixed together for maximum impact. I’ve always loved Matisse’s work, particularly ‘The Snail’, a postcard of which did appear on my Autumn 2009 moodboard, so perhaps unconsciously I was influenced by him after all. Check it out, at approx. 45minutes, Click Here (and being featured alongside Miffy is itself a lifelong dream!)

Get the Look… Nautical

Get the Look with Blackwell Cardigan as featured in ES Magazine

Looking for a Nautical look this season to mirror those seen in the latest catwalk shows? Then look no further! We’re currently loving ES Magazine’s “Get the Look” feature, which selects our very own Blackwell cardigan to enhance that dapper deckhand style. As suggested in the feature, try teaming with some skinny white trousers, and a neck scarf to finish the look.
